Rwanda – Delights from the Land of a Thousand Hills<\/h1>

Along with Ethiopia, Africa is considered not only the cradle of humanity but also the region of origin for Arabica coffee. It\u2019s no wonder, then, that the African continent produces coffee varieties that are as multifaceted and complex as the cultures from which they originate. And Rwanda is becoming increasingly important in the specialty coffee sector.<\/p>

From Mass Production to Speciality Coffee<\/h2>

Rwanda, a landlocked country in East Africa, offers ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. However, for a long time, coffee played no significant role in the \u201cLand of a Thousand Hills.\u201d Coffee cultivation in Rwanda gained importance primarily with the goal of strengthening the economy. In the 1990s, coffee production therefore increasingly focused on volume.<\/p>

But starting in the 2000s, a shift became apparent, prioritizing quality over quantity. Since then, smallholder farmers in Rwanda have been producing Arabica coffees that have made a name for themselves internationally. Today, Rwanda has become an integral part of the specialty coffee world.<\/p>

Red Bourbon – The Key to Flavor<\/h2>

The variety that dominates coffee cultivation in Rwanda is called Red Bourbon; it is a mutation of the Bourbon variety, which enjoys great popularity. What sets Red Bourbon apart is the comparatively long time it takes for the coffee cherries to ripen. This results in a more stable and structured flavor profile than in other varieties. Rwanda\u2019s volcanic soils and the stable climate of the highlands provide ideal conditions for this.<\/p>

The result is a complex coffee with a perfectly balanced flavor profile. The slow ripening of the coffee cherries allows for a steady accumulation of sugars, giving the resulting coffee a natural sweetness. In addition, coffees from Rwanda delight with fruity notes of red berries and citrus fruits.
